MFS Communications Co.'s deal to buy Northeast Networks Inc., a competitive phone provider in Westchester County, N.Y., effectively ends NNI's plan to provide cable service in the New York City suburb, an MFS executive said. Dan Caruso, regional director for MFS Development, last week said that MFS only serves businesses, not homes.

"Our intent would not be to offer cable service in that area as part of this acquisition," Caruso said. "That's aggravating," said Paul Feiner, town supervisor in Greenburgh, N.Y. Last summer, the town authorized Northeast Networks to provide cable television service in competition against Tele-Communications Inc.
