Novell Inc. will extend its already long networking reach into consumer homes, through a plan to embed its widely used "NetWare" software into office equipment and consumer devices - like digital set-top boxes. The software Goliath, whose products already link more than 40 million personal computers within businesses across the United States, has a lofty goal: to reach 1 billion users by the turn of the century.

To reach that target, Novell wants to step outside the zone of business local area networks (LANs) and into the as-yet untapped world of residential LANs, by connecting home PCs over cable and telco networks to large data servers.
