In a worldwide first, the cable industry may overtake the telephone industry as the largest purchaser of optical fiber cable this year, according to recent research released by Corning Inc. Overall, the fiber market remained bullish in 1994, and will rise again this year, as cable MSOs, international operators, telcos, long-distance carriers and other market segments wolf down record quantities of the optical fiber used in broadband networks.
Corning released its numbers during the Optical Fiber Conference in San Diego, Calif., last week. According to Corning's research, which aggregates the amount of optical fiber sold by all manufacturers, the North American fiber market grew about 27 percent last year, to just over 7.2 million kilometers, said...
