Murder and mayhem, the mainstays of the O.J. Simpson trial, are translating into an advertising boost so far for cable networks covering the case. Cable News Network, Courtroom Television Network and E! Entertainment Television are generating incremental ad dollars and in some cases even attracting some new advertisers as a result of their trial coverage and increased ratings.
The Los Angeles trial, which could last into the summer, is bringing millions of dollars of additional ad revenue to CNN. In addition, the trial coverage is not only getting high ratings but is having a halo effect on other programming on the three networks, boosting the ratings on other shows.
