Cox plans to test integration of voice, data and video in Va. (Cox Communications Inc.; Virginia)

Cox Communications is launching a test of digital voice, data and video services that it hopes will lead to a cost-effective way of integrating all such services into a single signal stream. The ambitious project, now getting under way in Hampton Roads, Va., is the outcome of nearly two years' worth of design discussions with Northern Telecom, which will be supplying gear for the trial, officials said.
"A lot of people think the idea of integrating all the digital signals into a single protocol is blue sky," said Mark Davis, director of engineering for telephone operations at Cox.
