The Memphis City Council has delayed Time Warner's application for local phone service until May 16. And some of the principals involved in providing local phone service say it's all about money.
The council was scheduled to vote last month on a proposed 20-year telecommunications franchise with Time Warner Inc., which owns Memphis Cablevision. Time Warner recently completed its fiber optic project in the city and will begin converting its subscribers' homes to the new system by the end of April, according to Dean Deyo, general manager, Time Warner Cablevision of Memphis. It now wants to use that same system to provide telephone service.
U.S. Signal, which already has a telecommunications franchise agreement with the city, also has a similar problem...
