Sony enters DSS wars at higher prices than RCA. (Sony Electronics Corp's Digital Satellite System receivers)

Sony Electronics Corp. launched its line of Digital Satellite System receivers last week, planning to charge more than current RCA versions despite a recent falloff in DSS sales.

When Sony hits the market next month, its base model will carry a suggested retail price of $749, compared with $699 for the RCA system made by Thomson Consumer Electronics Inc. Other models coming out in August will have $849 and $949 price tags.

Thomson's systems - with programming from DirecTv Inc. and USSB Inc. - have been surprisingly successful. The company has shipped more than 1 million units to dealers in about a year and more than 500,000 have actually been sold to consumers. The million-unit milestone marked the end of Thomson's exclusive hold on DSS system sales....
