SEC inquiry targeting cable analyst Moran. (Frederick W. Moran of Salomon Brothers Inc.)

NEW YORK - The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating whether a cable analyst gave his money manager father advance warning in 1993 that Bell Atlantic Corp. planned to take over Tele-Communications Inc. and Liberty Media Corp.

The investigation centers on Frederick W. Moran, a cable and cellular analyst at investment banker Salomon Bros. Moran is the son of Frederick A. Moran, chairman of money manager Moron Asset Management, and one of Wall Street's "media mafia" who has built a reputation for specializing in media and cellular investments.

Salomon was assigned by Bell Atlantic to advise it on the deal and brought analyst Moran "over the wall," the supposed "Chinese wall" separating securities firms' research analysts from the deals...
