It's put up or shut up time for television broadcasters challenging the modulation system selected by the Grand Alliance for its proposed high-definition TV system.
The Federal Communications Commission's Advisory Committee for Advanced Television Service (ACATS) has taken the first step toward a technical "bake-off" between Zenith Electronic Corp.'s VSB (Vestigial Sideband) modulation, now part of the Grand Alliance system, and the Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM) system backed by major television broadcasters.
Zenith's VSB is now under pressure from two sides, following the adoption of QAM modulation by the Digital Audio Visual Council (DAVIC) last month.
