Thomson Consumer Electronics will manufacture digital set-top boxes for the switched-digital video (SDV) networking gear Broad-Band Technologies Inc. is supplying to regional Bell operating companies, through a memo of understanding announced last week. The companies said the agreement, while not final, has been in the works for about two years, and is mutually nonexclusive.

Notably, executives with both companies said the deal stands to shave $50 to $90 off the price of "equivalent" hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) set-tops. Neither company could detail exactly where the end price for the set-top will land, saying the myriad of electronic options can drastically change the cost picture.
