Cable MSO-controlled Kansas City FiberNet, a Kansas City, Mo.-based provider of competitive-access telephone service, has set its sights on the Kansas local telephone market. Owned by Tele-Communications Inc. and Time Warner Inc., KC FiberNet has petitioned the Kansas Corporation Commission for permission to offer local phone service throughout the state.
As a result, the company is on a collision course with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., the proverbial 800-pound gorilla among the regional Bell operating companies when it comes to defending its five-state territory against unwanted competitors.
