Tandem Computers Inc. last week detailed a new multimedia server hardware architecture called "ServerNet," designed to store up to 1,000 times more data and spew it out at screamingly fast speeds - at one-tenth the cost of existing designs. In the works for the last five years at an R&D cost of $200 million, the server will hit thestreets early next year at an estimated entry-level price of between $25,000 and $75,000, said Richard Hellyer, systems marketing manager for Tandem.
"Five years ago, we started a research product to look at how servers should be architected for the year 2000," Hellyer said. "We found that future applications would be extremely rich in audio, video and data, and that the communications industry would drive those applications." ...
