Now that Gannett Co. has jumped into the cable business by agreeing to acquire Multimedia Inc., the big question is whether the publisher of USA Today wants to stay in. The consensus among Wall Street and media executives is that Gannett executives are interested primarily in the Multimedia properties that fit into its existing publishing and TV operations: Multimedia's 11 daily and 49 weekly newspapers, plus five broadcast stations.
Even Multimedia's TV syndication operation - home to daytime talk show hosts Phil Donahue and Sally Jesse Raphael - is considered an afterthought.
