Solar power is gaining ground as an option for powering end-of-line components in fiber networks in the wake of extensive testing by Bell Communications Research and BellSouth. With utilities collecting ever-higher upfront charges for installation of new power lines to feed remote network powering sites, cable companies, as well as telcos, have reason to investigate the solar alternative, said Myron Anduri, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Photocomm Inc., a leading supplier of solar powering equipment based in Scottsdale, Ariz.
So far, he added, the cable industry appears unaware of the possibilities. That could be because cable MSOs are still trying to identify how best to power their networks to carry lifeline telephony services, and so...
