The 1996 Summer Olympics may not be the only competition to hit Georgia next year. Atlanta's local telephone market will also be heating up about then, thanks to a Georgia Public Service Commission ruling last week authorizing U S West Inc. to begin offering local phone service to its 500,000 area cable television subscribers.
The PSC's action sets the stage for the first-ever showdown between regional Bell operating companies, as U S West and incumbent local exchange carrier BellSouth Corp. battle for telephone customers in the nation's ninth-largest market.
