PacTel confirms $165M wireless cable purchase. (Pacific Telesis Group)

Pacific Telesis Group confirmed last week that it has agreed to acquire wireless-cable assets inside and outside of California.

In addition, PacTel officials hinted that they might pull back from plans announced just two months ago to aggressively build wireline video systems in San Francisco (competing with Tele-Communications Inc.) and in San Diego (Cox Cable Communications' territory).

Steve Harris, vice president of public affairs for PacTel, said the company was discouraged by lack of progress on federal telecommunications legislation, by delays by the Federal Communications Commission in defining video dialtone and by an unfavorable ruling by California regulators.
