FCC may change cable's role in providing emergency info. (cable TV)

The Federal Communications Commission is nearing a decision that would dramatically change cable's role in providing emergency information to its customers. In its original ruling, handed down just over a year ago, the FCC told cable to prepare for a July 1997 deployment of equipment that provides audible alerts on all cable channels.
The audible alerts would direct subscribers to one video channel for more information. To accommodate the hearing-impaired, cable operators were to provide an external box that would alert those customers about looming danger. Now, the FCC is closing in on a revised emergency alert system (EAS) report and order, to determine what size measuring stick to use when defining "small systems" that are exempt from EAS equipment...
