Microsoft Corp., which stepped boldly into the cable community two years ago with big plans for interactive TV systems, now says its recent company-wide shift to the Internet still includes cable. But industry observers and analysts wonder whether Microsoft's Internet model actually runs counter to cable's high-speed data-service plans.

For starters, Microsoft's former interactive TV partner, Tele-Communications Inc., is steadfastly committed to Netscape Communications Corp., maker of leading Web browser Netscape Navigator - Microsoft's most formidable competitor in the Internet space.
