ADC enters 1,550 market. (ADC Video Systems Inc.; 1,550-nanometer optical electronics)

Launching a patent-pending transmitter and amplifier at the National Show later this month, ADC Video Systems Inc. will join the small group of vendors supplying 1,550-nanometer optical electronics to cable and telco network operators. The combined optical transmitter and amplifier is part of a spate of new lightwave products appearing from ADC as the company increases its focus on end-to-end video transmission and switching hardware, said John Holobinko, vice president of marketing and strategic planning for the manufacturer.
The new, externally modulated system offers an output power of between 18 and 20 milliwatts, depending on channel loading, he said. What makes the new 1,550-nm transmitter different from competing products from manufacturers like...
