COLUMBUS, OHIO, will host the first overbuild in a major U.S. city by a regional Bell operating company out to unseat an incumbent cable operator. Ameritech New Media, the cable television arm of Ameritech Corp., will take on Time Warner Cable in Columbus with a strategy of delivering more basic programming, at a lower cost, and without the need for a set-top converter box.

Ironically, it will be competing against the same cable operator that it has been battling to keep out of the Ohio local phone market for the last year. "It's worth noting that we're about to face severe competition from them, and [we] haven't put up any roadblocks," said Time Warner spokesman Mike Luftman.
