Score one for the World Wide Web. A special page on Cox Communications Inc.'s Web site promoting a systemwide free Home Box Office weekend preview has proven surprisingly effective, according to Marleen Burford, manager of marketing communications for Cox.

"We really didn't know what to expect," said Burford, "and [we] ended up being very pleased with the results."

Visitors to Cox's Web site soared during the preview weekend of March 22-24. The Saturday night before the preview, the site, open since January, attracted just 1,675 hits. On March 23, Saturday night hits totaled 24,891, said Burford. The site registered 49,189 hits for the three-day weekend, she said, as compared to 6,101 hits for the previous weekend.
