MCI enters Georgia phone market. (MCI Communications Corp.)

A flurry of telecom news in Georgia last week culminated in MCI Communications Corp. announcing that it had begun offering local phone service to businesses in metro Atlanta. At the same time, the Washington, D.C.-based long-distance carrier also asked the Georgia Public Service Commission to arbitrate its interconnection talks with BellSouth Corp., the state's dominant local exchange carrier.

The Georgia PSC had made news of its own a day earlier, when it set unbundled loop costs for BellSouth's competitors at $14.22, or 43 percent below the $25 figure that the regional Bell operating company had requested.
