GTE, Microsoft to test ADSL in Redmond. (asymmetrical digital subscriber line)

Building on a plan to find better ways to connect its customers to the Internet at high speeds, GTE Corp. last week announced plans to test ADSL technologies in tandem with Microsoft Corp. The tests are currently under way to some 40 Microsoft employees within its Redmond, Wash., campus, and they will extend over the next six months to include the University of Washington and up to 60 local business, executives said during a press briefing.
The Redmond test augments a "proof of concept" trial conducted by GTE in the Irving, Texas, area earlier this year. Several other trials will be introduced throughout the remainder of this year, said Flynn Nogueira, manager of the ADSL Program Office for GTE Telephone Operations.
