WASHINGTON - Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) last week said he opposed a proposal by Teleport Communications Group Inc. that could cause regulators to delay the approval of two Baby Bell mergers.
Cable operator-backed Teleport said the mergers should be denied approval until the four Baby Bells involved had opened their networks in compliance with the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Sept. 11 on the mergers, Hatch said he did not believe "it is proper" to apply such a standard, and lawyers from Bell Atlantic Corp. and SBC Communications Inc. said they agreed with his conclusion.
Yet Bernard Ebbers, president of LDDS WorldCom, said he favored Teleport's proposal.
