WebTV Networks Inc. took steps to improve its Internet-over-television service last week, while refuting claims that its first Christmas sales were nothing to e-mail home about. As the first real mass-market "convergence" product, WebTV is being closely watched by companies pushing Internet-TV applications over cable systems as an indication of their potential.

"This will be one of the first really good benchmarks of the convergence between computers and TV," International Data Corp. analyst Ted Julian said. Estimates by some analysts and news organizations, including The Wall Street Journal, said manufacturers Sony Electronics Corp. and Philips Consumer Electronics Co. sold around 30,000 WebTV converters since the product hit store shelves in October....
