Small ops to fight Murdoch, EchoStar deal. (merger of American Sky Broadcasting Inc. with EchoStar Communications Corp.)

WASHINGTON - Small cable operators are planning to protest American Sky Broadcasting Inc.'s $1 billion merger with EchoStar Communications Corp. and to urge regulators to make direct-broadcast satellite operators comply with the same regulatory burdens as cable operators. The Small Cable Business Association last week said that it will file oppositions with the Federal Communications Commission when either ASkyB or EchoStar applies to transfer DBS licenses to create the Sky DBS service.
