Video streaming software makes advances.

The latest advances in Internet video streaming software are beginning to take hold, adding luster to online news, sports and entertainment and fueling a new approach to distribution that is catching the interest of some cable operators.

The 24-hour online news service ABCNews.com, a joint venture between ABC News Internet Ventures and Starwave Corp., is among the first entities to exploit the new capabilities, in this case putting Progressive Networks Inc. RealVideo software to use to provide clips that complement text and other graphics on the site.

Presently the service is running "a couple of clips per day" using RealVideo, but it will be expanding the application rapidly as it improves its ability to convert news feeds to online site clips, said...
