Cable CEOs have taken another concerted action toward strategic cooperation, this time pursuing the development of telecommunications services over high-speed-data links. Sources said the executives, meeting as members of the board of Cable Television Laboratories Inc. two weeks ago, launched a task force devoted to packetized voice and videophone services.
Heading the group is Mark Coblitz, vice president of strategic planning at Comcast Corp. The action comes amid fast-moving technological developments that have brought telephony over the Internet to the brink of performance parity with the usual circuit-switched voice service.
