EchoStar soars, PrimeStar lags. (EchoStar Communications Corp.; PimeStar Partners L.P.)

The EchoStar III satellite that launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla., early last week wasn't the only thing soaring for EchoStar Communications Corp.

Despite being the last to come to market, the company again eclipsed PrimeStar Partners L.P., which continued to flounder in September after a sluggish August, in terms of subscriber growth. And EchoStar's growth rivaled - or may have surpassed - that of direct-broadcast satellite leader DirecTv Inc. EchoStar now seems on track to easily reach its goal of i million subscribers by the end of the year. The company added 105,000 new Dish Network customers to the books, up from August's 75,000, which was considered a banner month for EchoStar.
