U S West, TCI downplay Argentina. (U S West Inc.; Tele-Communications International Inc.)

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - The anticipated realignment of the cable industry in Argentina took major steps forward last week.

As the dust settled, U S West Inc. had exited the market; Tele-Communications International Inc. (TINTA) had reduced its stake significantly; and CEI Citicorp Holdings Inc. and Telefonica de Espana were working in even greater lockstep than usual to create a powerful MSO and to secure control in the industry's most important programming genre - sports.

Telefonica's overseas arm, Telefonica International (TISA), and CEI each purchased 33 percent of cable operator Cablevision/TCI(2), which has 600,000 subscribers. Previously, CEI alone had signed the option to buy 64 percent of Cablevision. This new arrangement, costing $US500...
