BALTIMORE - Comcast Corp. president Brian Roberts suggested last week that the cable operator might go it alone and handle its own digitally compressed programming, rather than using Headend in the Sky, the service that Tele-Communications Inc. is offering to operators. While saying that Comcast "might" be a HITS customer, he added that the MSO would most likely install equipment in its own headends to handle digital.

Speaking at the opening session of the Atlantic Cable Show here, Roberts said HITS worked well for TCI because of the "diverse geography" of the locations of its systems.
