How Do You Say 'Goooal' in Arkansan?(ESPN asks Bill Clinton to tennis finals)

Multichannel News, July, 1999 by Umstead, R. Thomas

Ask, and you may receive: In an effort to boost promotion for the Women's World Cup, ESPN ran a humorous advertising campaign encouraging President Clinton to attend the tournament finals. The network recruited several stars -- including Billie Jean King, 0. Gordon Liddy and Mark Spitz -- to lobby the president to appear.

It even rolled out a number for the president to call for his tickets, and got buddy James Carville to make a pitch. Well, the campaign worked, sort of. President Clinton was expected to attend last Saturday's game, but The Wire thinks it was more to support the U.S. women's team in the finals rather than an acknowledgment of ESPN's overt appeals.
