Animal Planet, Others Feed on Nature Genre

In terms of sheer quantity, Animal Planet is the king of cable's wildlife and nature jungle. But there are plenty of others in the herd. Animal Planet began its "all animals, all the time" mission in fall 1996 and went on to become the fastest-growing network of the 1990s. Its predecessor Discovery Channel, still maintaining its hold in the natural-history genre, pointed to the nightly Wild Discovery as its most popular nature-themed series.

Even business-news channel CNBC joined the hunt last fall, snaring the National Geographic Explorer weekend primetime block. And the National Geographic Society itself enters the fray come January, with its domestic National Geographic Channel.
