Moving well beyond its typical line of printers and PCs, Hewlett-Packard Co. said it hopes to find a cozy spot in consumer living rooms with the introduction of its stand-alone Digital Entertainment Center product. That box will come equipped with a built-in CD-writer that will enable users to transfer music to various types of MP3 players.
HP's new entrant will also handle dial-up, high-speed cable and digital-subscriber-line connections, and harbor enough digital storage to hold as many as 750 individual CDs. HP said the box is slated for release during the 2001 holiday season. In the meantime, the company will demonstrate a prototype at this week's Tech Expo in New York.
