While Charter Communications Inc. battles ESPN in the cable industry's first operator-programmer tiff over streaming video, another groundbreaking move the MSO made in that regard more than two months ago has gone largely unnoticed. In late March, Charter announced a software deal with Liberate Technologies Inc.
that would integrate Real Networks Inc.' RealPlayer into Motorola Inc./Liberate set-tops. Real said it's the company's first deal involving a cable MSO and a set-top box manufacturer. And it follows a similar arrangement that brings Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Media Player to future Motorola DCT-5000 series set-tops.
