Internet Privacy Hearings Get Under Way.(Brief Article)

WASHINGTON -- A key Senate committee has taken up the debate over online privacy protection, the outcome of which could reshape the way that cable operators and their competitors conduct business via the Internet. The July 11 hearing -- the first of a series before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee -- attempted to strike a balance between protecting consumers' rights and ensuring the growth of online business.

"As the Internet has grown, so too have concerns on privacy online," said Sen. Jean Carnahan (D-Mo.).
