SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA INC. (NYSE-SFA)
Scientific-Atlanta -- which recently rescinded its guidance for the fiscal first quarter and 2002 -- continued its spiral last week S-A slid 16 percent, or $4.08, between Aug. 15 and Aug. 21, after the company said it wouldn't meet its already lowered first-quarter revenue and earnings expectations. The stock dipped just 5 cents, to $21.10, in afternoon trading Aug. 22, after Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. upgraded its long-term rating from "accumulate" to "buy." Merrill lowered its full year 2002 earnings per share estimate to $1.07 from $1.39, but raised its rating based on S-A's low price and strong balance sheet.
