BASKING RIDGE, N.J. -- AT&T Corp. is crowing about its brand-new nationwide optical network, which it said will slash high-speed circuit provisioning time and restore service more quickly in the event of a disaster. The backbone, which is tapped by such MSOs as AT&T Broadband, Comcast Corp.
and Cox Communications Inc. for cable-modem service, can now carry traffic at bitrates as high as 10 gigabits per second, and connects more than 40 cities in the U.S. Software built into the CIENA CoreDirector switches includes real-time signaling and routing algorithms, which give each switch information on all available data traffic routes. In case of a system failure, the switches can automatically reroute traffic, according to the carrier.
