VIACOM INC. (NYSE--VIA)
Viacom shares surged 9.1 percent, or $3.25, over the five days leading to Aug. 14, propelled by Aug. 14's 260-point rally in the Dow and news that the advertising slump was showing signs of a reversal. Rival News Corp. helped bolster Viacom's position. In releasing its fiscal fourth-quarter results, News said advertising growth was better than expected in the period, and trends indicate further growth in the coming months.
