Breaking the glass ceiling: minority women gain primetime roles at cable networks. (Special Report: Diversity in Cable).(Brief Article)

If one were to examine the majority of executives at the head of the major basic and pay cable networks, one distinguishing characteristic would be hard to ignore: Most are white and male. Breaking through the proverbial glass ceiling into the ranks of network presidents and general managers has been a steady but slow practice for both women and minorities.

But being a minority and a woman brings an additional set of unique challenges and barriers to overcome within the cable hierarchy. Two years into the new millennium, five minority women have overcome those challenges and ignored historical biases, successfully taking on leadership roles at some highly-penetrated cable programming networks.
