I still can't shake The Cable Guy, a movie staring Jim Carrey as a bungling installer, when I think about the industry's new mantra: customer care. Like most cable subscribers, I don't think my cable company gives a hoot about me, except when it's time to send out the monthly bill. But the topic of customer care has become one blazing hot potato, given that satellite has already chipped away at about 20% of cable's best customers.

Now the telcos are returning, with Verizon Communications Inc. introducing its video service this first quarter.
