Silver Spring, Md. -- After tallying more than 500,000 online nominations, Discovery Channel and America Online Inc. have narrowed their search for the Greatest American, a seven-hour TV event set for June, to 100. The polling yielded some expected choices--Abraham Lincoln, Alexander Graham Bell, Bill Gates, Martin Luther King Jr., John F.
Kennedy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Elvis Presley--and perhaps some unexpected ones--Brett Favre, Christopher Reeve, Laura and Barbara Bush, Ellen DeGeneres and Dr. Phil McGraw. Hosted by Matt Lauer of NBC's Today, Discovery will debut Greatest American June 5 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) and air it every Sunday that month. Greatest American will conclude with a live finale from New York on June 26 at 9 p.m.
