Philips Service Scans for Pirated Web Video

Los Angeles -- Philips Content Identification , a unit of Royal Philips Electronics , last week announced MediaHedge, a service designed to automatically flag copyrighted videos that have been uploaded to a video-sharing or peer-to-peer network.

MediaHedge matches the "fingerprint" of user-uploaded video snippets with a master database of video provided by content owners. The videos can then either be blocked or tracked, depending on the copyright owner's wishes. According to Philips, the system can identify video even when it is severely degraded and can match very short video clips anywhere within original video material.
