The future of automatic teller machines (ATMs) remains uncertain despite their growing presence in gasoline stations and other retail outlets. About 47% of households currently use ATMs at least once a month while usage rates have increased by 15% each year. However, members of the credit industry believe that ATM usage could decline with the advent of home banking, point-of-sale systems and smart cards.

Just as the deployment of automatic teller machines (ATMs) reaches new heights at gasoline stations, convenience stores and even fast-food chains, those in the credit and debit industries have begun to question the future of ATM usage in an expanding world of electronic banking.
