NEXT YEAR WHEN THE CARROLL Independent Fuel Company celebrates the centennial of its 1907 founding, the Baltimore-based firm plans a celebration. "In the petroleum industry it can be a challenge each day to survive, much less 100 years," acknowledged Executive Vice President John Phelps.

Through a century of business (see sidebar) Carroll Fuel has seen it all--starting with the switch from coal to oil as the nation's primary source of consumer energy, to the current debates over alternative fuels. What has emerged is a company that is a local market leader in four related areas: branded fuel supply to retail dealers, commercial fuels, home heating, and HVAC sales and service.
