Structural steel framing is under way for the new city of Portsmouth, N.H., Public Library, according to North Branch Construction, Inc. of Henniker, N.H., the general contractor. North Branch began flying steel in December for the new $7-million library, which is being constructed on the site of the old Portsmouth Armory on Parrott Avenue. The armory was demolished in 2004. The new, 38,000-square-foot, two-story facility has a driven-pile foundation and structural steel frame with brick and stone veneer exterior. Amsler Mashek MacLean, Architects, Inc. of Boston, Mass., designed the building to be modern in function, sensitive to the architecture of the city and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified.
