Boomers' prospects mixed. Although most Americans born between 1946 and 1964 will be economically secure in retirement, about a fourth will depend on government benefits, according to the Congressional Budget Office. For those in the latter category, the best strategy is to postpone retirement, which leads to higher Social Security checks.
