HHS places orders for bird flu vaccine even though product may not work.
Older Americans Report, October, 2005
As bird flu spreads from Asia to Europe, U.S. officials are trying to stay one step ahead, because if the virus mutates, millions of people may be at risk. It is not clear, however, why HHS is trying to stockpile vaccines against the virus before that mutation occurs.
This week, HHS awarded a $62.5 million contract to manufacture bird flu vaccine to Chiron Corporation, the company that could not fulfill its orders for regular flu vaccine last year when British officials shut down its plant. HHS did not say how many doses the contract would yield, but it is trying to stockpile 20 million doses of bird flu vaccine and earlier this year awarded a $100 million contract to sanofi pasteur for this same purpose.
