Study finds 76 distressed facilities, but in-depth information lacking.(Housing)

At least 2 percent of public housing developments for the elderly and disabled suffer from severe problems, requiring major physical improvements and more services to isolated residents, a government watchdog agency says.

The study from the Government Accountability Office says the actual number of distressed properties may be more than 2 percent, but the federal government lacks comprehensive data to make a firm determination. Using criteria that included the age of a facility, poverty of the surrounding neighborhood, surveys of housing administrators and site visits, GAO found at least 76 facilities with severe distress. Overall, there are more than 3,500 public housing complexes that cater primarily to seniors and the disabled.
