Recent developments at D&W Food Centers Inc., a privately held chain of 24 supermarkets in Michigan based in Grand Rapids, exemplify the dynamic market for Home Meal Replacement (HMR) foods.

In early '96, the company changed from bulk-shipped products packaged on-site at each store to a centralized kitchen and packaging facility in Grand Rapids for its prepackaged HMR entrees and side dishes. A switch was also made from microwavable plastic clamshells to dual-ovenable paperboard trays...
